AAMF: A Symphony in Five Movements

August 8th, 2010

As AAMF announces their 2010 lineup filled with international superstars of hip-hop, jazz, pop, world, and beyond — including Jake Shimabukuro, Shing02, Kero One, Shanghai Restoration Project, Dana Leong, Charmaine Clamor, and many more — festival director Paul Im talks about his excitement for the upcoming festival.

“As a promoter, the only thing better than having a sold-out festival is having a sold-out festival filled from start to finish with music I love. And I really love this Festival’s lineup!” Im says. “I’m extremely proud of our programming this year. We’re presenting the most current, culturally relevant, and artistically engaging artists of Asian descent in the world today, all together in a cohesive format. Whether it be hip-hop, jazz, pop, world music, or electronica, we’ve got the best of it all at this year’s Asian American Music Festival.”

Mr. Im explains the growth of his festival. “This year’s Asian American Music Festival, an evolution from Asian American Jazz Festival, reflects our decision to celebrate all expressions of music by API artists, no matter the genre.” Mr. Im says. “Asian American artists have had rich histories in hip-hop, jazz, world, and electronic music. This festival celebrates diversity while focusing on Asian American cultural identity and the API artists who share this connection.”

The Festival’s Five Movements:

Movement 1 (Friday Evening): Urbanisms
Movement 2 (Saturday Day): Generations
Movement 3 (Saturday Evening): Stars of the Islands

Jake Shimabukuro to Headline Movement 3: Stars of the Islands Saturday Evening

July 20th, 2010

International Ukulele Superstar Jake Shimabukuro will be headlining our Saturday Evening show.

Jake Shimabukuro is recognized as one of the world’s most exciting and innovative ukulele players and composers. Renowned for lightning-fast fingers and revolutionary playing techniques, Jake views the ukulele as an “untapped source of music with unlimited potential”. His virtuosity defies label or category. Playing jazz, blues, funk, classical, bluegrass, folk, flamenco, and rock, alongside names such as Jimmy Buffett, Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, Yo-Yo Ma, and Bette Midler, Jake’s mission is to show everyone that the ukulele is capable of so much more than the traditional Hawaiian music – or corny showbiz routines — many associate it with.

From a modest beginning performing at a local Honolulu café, Jake has gone on to play renowned and popular venues and festivals across the world. This past summer Jake added Sweden, Finland, France, Spain, and Brazil to the list of countries he’s performed in, exposing his virtuosity and charming stage presence to crowds of up to 50,000. Jake has also performed on national television shows such as NBC’s The Late Show with Conan O’Brien, The Today Show, and Last Call With Carson Daly, as well been featured on NPR’s Morning Edition and World Café, Public Radio International’s The World, Sirius/XM’s The Bob Edwards Show, and others.
